Examples of settings for type A outbreaks include church socials, company picnics, wedding receptions, and parties where lists of attendees are at least theoretically available. Since denominator information is generally available, attack rates and relative risks can be calculated. Investigations of this type are classic historical prospective or retrospective studies.
The list of potential sources is also relatively small and is represented by a list of food items served. The etiologic agent is generally unknown and lists of potential pathogens are generated from data on incubation periods and symptom frequencies.
