Larger outbreaks involving
interstate commerce and low level contamination may involve very few cases
in a given local jurisdiction and are often picked up at the state or
Federal level.
The detection of these types of outbreaks represents the
epitome of the art of public health surveillance and is indicative of an
effective surveillance network. This requires cooperation and effort from
physicians, laboratorians, infection control practioners and other health
care professionals in addition to public health officials. The
satisfaction one gains from picking up these outbreaks is well worth the
tedium of data entry and monitoring.
