Positive changes in all but two measures of effect were associated with having a service dog. All participants in the service dog group showed substantial improvements in self-esteem and psychological well-being within 6 months. After one year, participants with service dogs showed significant increases in community integration scores compared with the control group.
Interpretation: Providing trained service dogs for people with physical disabilities who live independently results in significant improvements in mental health and well being in a cost-effective manner.
