The POPULIS system offers an evidence-based framework for planning population-wide health service delivery. POPULIS uses
administrative data to track the health status of populations and their use of health care services (doctors, hospitals & nursing homes) regardless of where usage occurs. This information is important for health planners especially since people often travel to receive health care. POPULIS brings together a set of health indicators which allow planners to measure variations in population health status against key factors influencing health –demographics, socio-economics, and health services. Its focus on people (rather than on the health care services) helps regional health planners tailor programs to the needs of the population they serve. This approach draws attention to problem areas and to potential impacts of changes in service delivery on resource distribution & efficiencies, as well as on levels of population health. |
