earthquake south of Khorasan, Iran, only 368 (3.3%) of 11,254 people injured required
inpatient care (30). A similar pattern of injuries is discussed in reports by
Durkin, Thiel, et al., which indicated that following the 1989 Loma Prieta
earthquake as many as 60% of those with earthquake-related injuries either treated
themselves or received treatment in nonhospital settings (31). These findings
suggest that a substantial number of earthquake-related injuries are treated outside the
