Researchers are
just beginning to learn about the influence of depression on the growing
fetus and the mother. Recent research suggests that this illness
exponentially increases at the onset of menses with hormonal changes
correlating with the onset of major depressive disorder. We also know that
throughout the women’s lifecycle, increased rates of depression occur during
periods of hormonal flux. One of these period is depression during
pregnancy. Over the past decade, interest in the prenatal period has
increased and is part of a broader spectrum of women’s mental health.
