The cost of
transferring remittances is often 20 % of the amount transferred, meaning
that as much as $1 billion is lost to the migrants themselves. To send a
check in the opposite direction to the US could cost US$50.
At the national level, remittances reached a considerable overall figure
of between US $2.5 and $3.9 billion in 1995. Remittances are equivalent to
more than one-half (57 %) of the foreign exchange available through foreign
direct investment in the same year. This represents a little less than 5 %
of the foreign exchange obtained by Mexico for the export of goods.
