Aggressive antiretroviral therapy with at least
three drugs is recommended for initial treatment of infected children
because it provides the best opportunity to preserve immune function and
delay disease progression. The goal of antiretroviral therapy is to maximally suppress viral replication, preferably to undetectable levels for as long a time as possible, while preserving and/or restoring immune function and minimizing drug toxicity. |
