It can be said that the XIXth century was truly
an epoch of crisis for the universities in Mexico, and that the “new
university model” arose under the idea of a “national university system” or
rather a “public university,” that is, a model in which the state is in
charge of financing higher education for the nation. The “Universidad
Nacional Autónoma de México” was established in 1910 as a national
university, and since 1929 it has been an institution autonomous and
independent from the state. By the 1940s, two social events were in process:
1) the fast growth of urbanization, and 2) a mass formation of
professionals.
