Carolina Abuelo MD MSc was an innkeeper in San Francisco prior to attending
medical school at Duke University. While obtaining her MD, she did research
on trachoma in Tanzania that led to a Master of Sciences from the London
School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She then trained in internal
medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston. Upon graduation, Dr. Abuelo
used her Spanish language and cultural skills as a primary care physician
for Boston's Latino community from the Dominican Republic, Honduras,
Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. Currently, she is one of two HIV Medical
Association Clinical Fellows in the country. Her fellowship is based at
Brown University where she also does research related to HIV such as on
Human Papilloma Virus and clinical trials in HIV positive individuals.
