RVF that was previously confined to
the African continent has spread to the east of the Red Sea. The disease in humans is
often mild but occasionally leads to severe morbidity and mortality. Currently there is no
vaccine for humans to prevent the disease and no specific treatment of infected cases.
Many questions regarding the disease epidemiology and ecology remain unanswered. A number
of challenges remain for the prevention and control of RVF outbreaks.
