The role of
terrorism in commercial aviation accidents is shown here; using the database maintained at
the Aviation Safety Network. Approximately 1000 hijackings or attempted hijackings have
been recorded over the last 50 years (1948-2001), with an associated 1060 fatalities. Other
forms of terrorism related to air safety exist as well. Bombs or sabotage resulted in 42
crashes in the last 50 years. Seventy-six events were related to the plane being shot
down. There are more reported fatalities from these events than from hijackings. |
