Variables used in this study were sex, age, anatomic site, histological type, level of invasion and tumour thickness in millimetres. Both tumour anatomic site and histological type were coded following the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) because of its wide use in cancer registries. Level of invasion was classified according to the five levels defined by Clark [10].
