A Documentation Center of Mediterranean Architecture at Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Posted on
Bibliotheca Alexandrina started preparing an action plan for the documentation center of Mediterranean architecture. The general assembly of the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR), held in Montpellier (France) - October 2000, made a decision, which aimed at documenting the architectural and cultural heritage of the countries of the Mediterranean basin. It was also decided that this center would be situated in Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library, declared that the center is currently in the process of preparing its own action plan and establishing a digital laboratory at the Library to document the architectural experiences and to coordinate with the architectural associations which are members of the Union of Mediterranean Architects to provide the center with the documents of the architectural projects of the member countries. Within this framework, the works of the Egyptian architects has been gathered, as Eng. Sherif El-Hakim delivered the original drawings and documents of the Nubian Museum. He added that the workgroup responsible for this center included representatives from France, Spain, Croatia, Palestine and Egypt. The Documentation processes will be performed using advanced digital technology and will be recorded on DVD or CD which will be made available to architects, architecture historians and students for use.
