A Lecture about Arabic Literature in Germany at the BA

Alexandria—The BA Arts Center, in cooperation with Goethe Institute, is organizing a lecture on “The Status of Arabic Literature in German Speaking Countries”, in which Professor Hartmut Fähndrich will speak.

Professor Fähndrich, born in 1944, is one of the most leading translators of Arabic literature into German. He teaches Arabic Language and History of Civilization in the Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich. He translated more than fifty books including works of Gamal Al-Ghitani, Sunnallah Ibrahim, Naguib Mahfouz, Youseef Idris, Edward Kharat and Salwa Bakr among others. He also introduced Alaa Al-Aswany and Ibrahim Al-Kawani to German readers. Fähndrich received many awards for his contributions including one from the League of Arab States and another from the Higher Council of Culture in Egypt.

The Lecture will be held in the BACC Lectures Hall on Saturday, 31 January 2009 at 8:00 pm. Professor Fähndrich will be also present in Goethe Institute on Friday 30 January at 7:00 pm, together with Alaa Al-Aswany, for a reading from Al-Aswany’s Chicago, which Fähndrich has recently translated into German.
