The Ancient Library of Alexandria in Cairo Salon

Alexandria— In this week’s episode of the “Cairo Salon” TV Show, aired on Channel One every Saturday at 11:30 pm, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, will discuss the cultural and enlightening role of the Ancient Library of Alexandria, the first public Library known in history.

The episode will feature recordings by a number of scholars, namely: Dr. Sahar Hamouda, Head of the English Department, Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University; Dr. Moustafa El-Abbady, Professor of History, Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University; and Dr. Ahmed Etman, Professor of Greek and Latin Studies and Comparative Literature, Faculty of Arts, Cairo University.

The Ancient Library of Alexandria was established by Alexander the Great successors more than 2000 years ago. It encompassed the largest collection of books in the Ancient World, reaching up to 700,000 books, including the works of Homer and the complete Library of Aristotle.
