Alexandria— The BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC) hosted eminent Professor Mostafa El-Sayed on Sunday, 29 March 2009, to give a lecture on Nanoscience and the properties of nanometer materials at the BACC Great Hall.

Entitled “Nantechnology: the Big Future Technology of the Very Small: the Hype and the Reality”, Dr. El-Sayed gave a very interesting lecture, in which he reviewed the importance of materials throughout ages; the hype about nanomaterials , its origin, and potential applications. He also spoke about gold properties and the potential difficulties facing nanotechnology applications.

Dr. El-Sayed described the twentieth century as the technology age, characterized by tremendous achievements in information technology resulting into new applications in computers, cell phones, and others. He also emphasized the importance of scientific research and its applications in industry.

Speaking about nanometer, Dr. El-Sayed explained how the properties of materials change significantly when its size decreases. He defined nanoscience as the process of making and studying nanostructure; and nanotechnology as the usage and application of nanoscience.

At the end of his lecture, Dr. El-Sayed briefed his research work on gold nanoparticles and the usage of gold in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer tumors. He emphasized that research on the usage of gold in the treatment of cancer in humans is still underway.

Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed is Julius Brown Chair and Regents Professor, and Director of the Laser Dynamics Laboratory in the United States of America. He has been granted numerous prestigious awards as a recognition of his outstanding scientific research, including the 2007 US National Medal of Science from US President Goerge W. Bush and the 2009 Order of the Republic of First Class from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. He was also announced to be the recipient of the 2009 Ahmed Zewail Prize in Molecular Sciences. Professor Elsayed is an elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences; elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science (AAAS), and the American Physical Society; and an associate member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS).
