“Research Bioethics” Conference at the BA

Alexandria—The BA Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) hosts a Conference entitled “Research Bioethics” on 15 and 16 July 2009.

This Meeting aims at setting up a National Committee for Bioethics, that would provide advice and counsel on bioethics and related matters to the Egyptian Prime Minister, who had previously asked members of the National Supreme Council on Science and Technology Research to help in studying and advising on setting up such a committee.

The opening session witnesses the participation of eminent figures from Egypt and abroad, including Dr. Magdy Yacoub, Imperial College, London; Dr. Abdel Moaty Bayomy, Professor, Faculty of Theology, Al-Azhar University; Daniel Wikler, Professor of Ethics and Population Health, Harvard School of Public Health, USA; Father Yohana Kalta, Deputy Patriarch of Catholic Church, Egypt; Hugh Whittal, Director of the Secretariat, Nuffield Council on Bioethics, United Kingdom; Mohamed Hassan, President, African Academy of Sciences; Mohamed Kamaleldin Imam, Professor of Law, Alexandria University, Egypt; and Sherif Omar, Professor of Surgical Oncology, National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, Egypt.

Participants discuss bioethics in relation to health, agriculture, environment, and forensic and privacy. Recommendations are issued in the closing session, moderated by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria.
