The BA Art Exhibitions and Collections Department, in collaboration with the Writing and Scripts Center, organizes the “Collection of Sheikh Mohamed Abdel-Rahman: Masterpieces of Arabic Calligraphy Art in Egypt” Exhibition on Wednesday, 20 November 2019, at 3:00 pm, in the BACC West Exhibition Hall.
Sheikh Mohamed Abd El-Rahman was born in 1890 in Al-Meimoun, Beni Suef. He was taught Arabic Calligraphy and its arts by Mahmoud Abdel Razeq and Sheikh Abdel Ghani Aggour. Subsequently, he was appointed as a teacher of Arabic Calligraphy at Al-Azhar Institute in Alexandria, in 1909. Then, he worked at the Egyptian Survey Authority in 1919.
The entire collection is a clear example of the aesthetic and calligraphic diversity of the Egyptian School of Calligraphy in the mid-twentieth century as represented by Sheikh Mohamed Abd El-Rahman. It also demonstrates the dexterity of using all types of Arabic fonts, including Thuluth, Naskh, Persian, and Diwani, as well as the close relations between calligraphers and the types of gifts they exchange.
Believing in the role of the BA and its mission to disseminate the culture of art appreciation in society, and introduce its visitors—especially youth—to the Egyptian aesthetic heritage in all artistic fields, the family of the late calligrapher Sheikh Mohamed Abd El-Rahman has donated a valuable collection of his work and belongings to be added to the artistic collection at the BA.
The exhibition will be open until Saturday, 30 November 2019; daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Fridays and Saturdays: 10:00 am – 7:00 pm.
