FIRST LEGO Competition at the BA

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted the “FIRST LEGO Senior” competition for the 17th consecutive year, from 7 to 9 June 2021, in collaboration with Techno Future Egypt. The competition featured a remarkable group of students, instructors, organizers, judges, and success partners.
The competition tackles a different theme that raises awareness about real issues facing the world, since the fields of science and engineering can help resolve critical problems such as natural disasters, food security, climate change, etc. The participating teams work on finding creative solutions to these issues through several phases: conducting meticulous research on the competition theme; designing and building a mobile model of Lego robots that can perform certain tasks within a specific period; and finally presenting the research findings through a poster designed by each team.
Each team consists of 3 -7 members who are encouraged to use their imagination to solve many engineering challenges. This process will help them develop their life skills such as teamwork, problem solving, and the ability to think creatively. It will also motivate them to contribute positively to their communities.
Around 33 schools, 68 teams, 600 students, 85 judges and supervisors, 41 mentors, and 80 volunteers took part in the competition.
The jury, which included specialized engineers and professional volunteers, was impressed by the event organization, the students’ standards, and the proposed ideas. This view demonstrates the potential of Egyptian students, which will be reflected in future Arab and international competitions, as the winning team will be eligible to represent Egypt in the international competition taking place in the Unites States, where several teams from around the world will compete for prestigious prizes and scholarships offered by major international scientific entities and institutions.
