BA Director Receives Award for Archaeological Map of Egypt Project

Prof. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, witnessed the opening session of the 26th international conference of the Arab Council of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists, in the presence of Prof. Amr Salama, Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities and Prof. Mohamed El-Kahlawey, President of the Arab Council of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists, together with a number of archaeologists and heritage experts from the Arab world.

In his speech, Dr. Ahmed Zayed pointed out that the BA seeks, through its various centers, to support and develop the processes of managing and documenting heritage, and to provide and make knowledge accessible to all communities. He noted that the BA has been committed to preserving this rich heritage and developing tools that keep pace with the successive development of information technology, which contributes to the enrichment and dissemination of Arab cultural content.

Dr Zayed received the Union Award for the year 2023 for the section on the use of information technology in documenting heritage and antiquities in the Arab world, presented by Sheikha Alyazia bint Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, for the project "The Archaeological Map of Egypt: the Experience of Documenting Archaeological Sites Using Geographic Information Systems", which was developed and produced by the BA Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT). The project aims to provide a comprehensive and updated database of archaeological sites in Egypt in both Arabic and English.
