Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, departed from Cairo heading to Amsterdam to chair an international committee for diminishing the scientific gap between the developed world and the developing countries. The Committee was established after the meeting held in Tokyo in December 2000, in which 80 international scientific academies participated. Such academies established an international council of 15 members in order to set an international policy for reducing the scientific gap between the developed world and the developing countries. Dr. Serageldin noted that such a gap is widening in an unprecedented way. Hence, the developing countries are unable of catching up with the progress and developments evolving in the developed world or even keeping track of these developments.
Both the secretariat and members of the committee attended a three-day meeting in Amsterdam chaired by Dr. Serageldin to set a two-year agenda plan for editing a report determining the strategy of the international committee. The committee included among its members top scientists such as President of Harvard University, Dr. N. Hudston.
Meanwhile, Dr. Serageldin has chaired a number of international committees, the most prominent of which is the International Water Commission that played an effective role in confronting several global problems.
