An Open Discussion among Librarians

“An Open Dialogue Among Librarians” took place on 12 November 2001 at the premises of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, delivered an address at the inaugural session, in which he presented the history of the Ancient Library, the role of the New Library, its activities, and the digital library.
Dr. Shaaban Khalifa, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Basset, Mr. Mohamed Hamdy, Mr. Mohamed Gamal El Ghandour, Professor Dr. Shawky Salem, and Professor Dr. Gamal El Khouly discussed different topics including: the identity of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina through its acquisition policy and reader services, the policy of the Library and its administrative system, marketing for the Library, long-term planning and funding, evaluation of the soft-opening, internet archive, information system and particularly the system for manuscripts, means of restoration and conservation of manuscripts, means of cooperation with other libraries in Egypt, the future of the Library, holding an annual meeting for librarians, issuing an Egyptian periodical for the Library, open access area and stacks, and issuing a brochure on the Library, cooperating with librarians.
The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. Samir Ghareeb.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Dr. Yousif Zeidan, Head of Acquisition and Manuscripts Departments, and Mrs. Layla Abdelhady, Head of Library Services, then commented on the topics discussed.
Afterwards, dialogue was open for all the participants.
