Alexandria—
Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Mr. Rob D. van den Berg, Director of Global Environmental Facilities Evaluation Office (GEF EO), signed a memorandum of understanding with the aim to exchange knowledge and expertise on general environmental issues including climate change; assess the sustainability of the environmental system; and promote the cooperation on environmental issues between the BA and the GEF EO.
This memorandum reflects the BA's interest in preserving the environment as a major element for growth and progress, especially at a time when humanity is facing the challenge of climate change.
The BA Advisors’ Office and GEF EO will co-organize an international conference entitled "The International Conference on Evaluating Climate Change and Development", from 10 to 13 May 2008 at the BA.
The Conference will introduce sound practices for evaluating climate change and its impact on developmental projects and programs and means to reduce climate change and adapt to its impacts. The Conference themes will include:
• Climate change mitigation (including policy and market interventions in sectors such as energy and transportation)
• Adaption to climate change (including land degradation, agricultural development, water management, preparedness for natural disasters, displacement and climate resilience).
It is expected that this conference will succeed in mobilizing international efforts to increase awareness about the phenomenon of climate change, to identify good practices for mitigation and adaptation to climate.
