The BA is organizing a lecture entitled “Wikipedia, Wikia, and the Future of Free Culture” by Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia, on Wednesday, 16 July 2008.
As the Internet provides the world with limitless possibilities concerning information and knowledge attainment, and with the birth of the second generation of the internet, questions arise about what is to come. In breaking away from Copyrights and intellectual property laws, new realms of creativity and progress are discovered.
Jimmy Wales will discuss the future of such endeavors in close relation to his life’s work and with specific emphasis on the future of free culture in the Arab region.
Jimmy Wales is known for his role in the founding of Wikipedia, a free online open content encyclopedia. Around Wikipedia, the whole Wikimedia Foundation sprung out, a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting and developing educational content and to disseminating it effectively and globally. Wales currently serves as the President of Wikia, a privately owned free web hosting service founded in 2004.
The Lecture will start at 15:00 hrs at the BA Conference Center, Great Hall.
