Alexandria—The BA Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies is organizing a Lecture entitled “Ship Building in Hellenistic Alexandria” by Harry Tzalas on Friday, 17 April 2009.
Harry Tzalas, author of Farewell to Alexandria, is scheduled to give a lecture on Alexandria Ship Construction during the Ptolemaic times and what came after. Tzalas had studied this subject for years and built a full scale replica of a Hellenistic age ship by duplicating the hull of the Ship of Kyrenia which was built in circa 350 BC and sank in circa 302 BC on the Sea Route between Alexandria and the Levant. This was the trade route that existed between Alexandria and the vast kingdom of the Ptolemies at that time.
Harry Tzalas was born and educated in Alexandria. In 1956, aged 20, he emigrated with his family to Brazil for 3 years, before settling in Greece. He is the Founder and President of the Hellenic Institute for Ancient and Medieval Alexandrian Studies, based in Athens.
The Lecture will take place at the BACC Lectures Hall at 6:00 pm.
