Launching the Digital Inscription Library

Posted on

Alexandria—The BA Calligraphy Center launches on Thursday 13 August 2009 the “Digital Inscription Library”.

The Digital Library of Inscriptions Project is a digital record of writings found on historic buildings and works of art throughout the ages. These inscriptions are presented in digital form including a brief description and photographs, as well as a translation of the inscriptions from their original language into both English and Arabic. These in turn will be published on the World Wide Web through the Calligraphy Center’s website.

In its first phase, the Digital Library includes more than 1500 inscriptions in a variety of languages: Ancient Egyptian, Arabic, Persian and Turkish, in addition to a collection of a variety of scripts.

The project aims at establishing an integrated library for a variety of inscriptions; preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the monuments; document various written inscriptions throughout the ages; and make them available to scholars and researchers each in their respective field. Besides, the project is implemented using the latest technology, thus fulfilling the BA’s goal of being a leading institution in the digital age.

The Ceremony is held at the BACC Delegates Hall at 7:00 pm.
