ICOM Egypt Grants BA Manuscript Museum the “A Day at the Museum” Award

ICOM Egypt, the national committee of the International Council of Museums has granted the BA Manuscript Museum the “A Day at the Museum” award. The award was granted as part of the 2017 Best Practice Awards competition, which was collaboratively organized and held by ICOM Egypt, the Ministry of State for Antiquities, the Ministry of Culture, and the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology from 16 to 18 May 2017 in celebration of the International Museum Day.
A number of children had participated in the competition and activities held at the Manuscript Museum. Dr. Khaled Azab, Head of ICOM Egypt; Dr. Tarek Sayed Tawfik, director general of the Grand Egyptian Museum; Dr. Adel Rayan, the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology representative; and Yuji Kurihara, Executive Vice Director of Kyoto National Museum in Japan and a board member of ICOM Japan presented the winning children with awards during the celebration, which was held at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat on 16 May 2017.
It is worth mentioning that celebrating the IMD started in 1977 under the sponsorship of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The theme of the 2017 IMD is “Museums and Contested Histories: Saying the Unspeakable in Museums”. It focuses on the role of museums that use their services to benefit societies and, thus, become hubs for promoting peaceful relationships between different peoples. This theme also highlights how the acceptance of a contested history is the first step toward envisioning a shared future built on reconciliation.
