Learning Hieroglyphs for Adults: New Writing and Scripts Center Website

Posted on

Dr. Mostafa el Feki, BA Director, stated that its Writing and Scripts Center has launched a website, in collaboration with the BA Information Technology Department, for learning hieroglyphs for adults.

The vital role of e-learning in strengthening knowledge societies is one of the main reasons behind creating the website, as e-learning will help the BA become a leading entity in the digital and technological field. Learning hieroglyphics online seems much easier and faster than doing so through reading a book. Thus, the main benefit of creating an educational hieroglyphic website is to support teaching, learning, and conducting research on the ancient Egyptian language. The website is an exemplar on how e-projects have become one of the very important tools in e-learning.

The Writing and Scripts Center relied on academic figures, Egyptologists, and researches specializing in ancient Egyptian language to compile the website’s scientific and academic material.

The website includes a wide range of diverse topics that highlight the development stages of the ancient Egyptian language through a number of lessons. Through these lessons, users can learn to read hieroglyphs step by step. After completing each lesson, users may test and apply their newly acquired knowledge by taking a series of interactive quizzes.

As an executive step, the website also aimed to build an online dictionary of hieroglyphic signs in both Arabic and English. The idea was adopted due to the scarcity of electronic projects targeting Arabic speaking audiences. It is a long-term dictionary that is continuously enriched with words and other educational subjects. The dictionary currently includes around than 6,900 words.

The Writing and Scripts Center team made sure to include a collection of various articles on the discovery of the Rosetta Stone and others on a variety of topics related to the Ancient Egyptian scribe, his tools, and Ancient Egyptian writing materials on the website. The team also added numerous e-references and resources that serve the website’s academic and scientific content.
