The BA Writing and Scripts Center issued the book Memory of Printing and Publishing in the Middle East. It is considered a serious study that discusses several topics related to the history of printing and publishing in Middle Eastern countries.
The book is the product of the Fourth International Seminar for the History of Printing and Publishing in the Languages and Countries of the Middle East, held in September 2011, in Alexandria.
The importance of this book lies in its inclusion of several articles that explore the birth and development of printing in the different languages of the Arab World such as Arabic and Ottoman Turkish, from the 10th to the 20th century. It also shows how printing was affected by the historical, social and intellectual aspects in various parts of the Middle East and the Far East, as well as places stretching from Morocco to Europe and South America.
Moreover, the book reflects the richness of the heritage of printing in the Middle East as it highlights how printing was used in supporting the national struggle of the Palestinian people or igniting the Cold War. It also emphasizes the dissemination of printing in the Middle East, especially in Egypt, before the establishment of Bulaq Press.
It is worth mentioning that the first international seminar for printing was held at the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz in 2002, while the second was held at the National Library of France (Bibliothèque nationale de France) in 2005. The third took place at Leipzig University in Germany, in 2008.
