The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is a participant at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, 5 – 10 October 2004. As the fifty-sixth fair celebrates Arabic culture under the theme of "One World," the Arab World is Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Along with twenty-two members of the League of Arab Nations, the library will present a diverse literary and cultural program.
The BA’s pavilion will include a variety of published works, presented by the different departments and research centers affiliated to the library. A group of BA executives, headed by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, are scheduled to lecture on a variety of cultural and literary topics: Dr. Serageldin will discuss the role of the library in the theme of culture “The Library of Alexandria – A Beacon for International Cultural Radiance.” Dr. Youssef Zeidan, Director of the Manuscripts Center will present the “Role of the Manuscripts Center in Reviving the Library of Alexandria,” and Dr. Fathi Saleh will talk about his center’s projects of “Natural and Cultural Heritage Documentation.” On the topic of “The Other in the Contemporary Arabic Novel”, Dr. Gaber Asfour will speak as Cultural Counselor to the Director of the Library of Alexandria.
Through its participation in this international intellectual gathering, the BA aims to accentuate that Arab culture is in fact part and parcel of the world culture and not an isolated entity. Towards this goal, the BA has employed state-of-the-art techniques to introduce the varied aspects of the Arab time-honored intellectual experience, innovation and arts.
