The Planetarium Science Center, affiliated to the Cultural Outreach Sector, organized the “Eratosthenes Festivity” on Thursday, 18 June 2020, marking the Earth circumference’s first measurement 2000 years ago conducted by Eratosthenes, the Greek mathematician, geographer, and astronomer.

The Festivity included a series of events starting at 10:00 am with the participation of students, who followed the steps of Eratosthenes and measured the Earth’s circumference using a stick’s shadow. The experiment was followed by a play, written and narrated by Dr. Shaimaa El-Sherif, Head of the Halls Department at the BA. Dr. Omar Fikry, Head of the Planetarium Theater Section, also gave a lecture explaining the methodology of measuring the Earth’s circumference.

The Eratosthenes Festivity is an annual tradition held at the BA Plaza, but due to the outburst of the Corona pandemic this year, the event was held live on the PSC Facebook page.

Audience, who miss the live event, can still view the recorded broadcast on the PSC Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BAPSC/
