Elfeki: “Human Rights Discussions Have Become a Means of Twisting the Truth”

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized an intellectual gathering entitled “Human Rights and Double Standards” on Tuesday, 22 December 2020, in Cairo. The event was attended by Dr. Moustafa Elfeki, Director of the BA; Dr. Shawki Allam, the Grand Mufti of Egypt; Anba Ermia, Director of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center; Mr. Mohamed Fayik, President of the National Council for Human Rights; Mr. Mohamed Ragai Attia, President of the Bar Association; Dr. Ali El-din Helal, Professor of Political Sciences at Cairo University; Dr. Doria Sharaf El-din, former Minister of Information; and Ambassador Ahmed Ehab Gamal El-din, Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights.
During his speech, Elfeki said that this gathering coincided with the 72nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which represented a valuable addition human civilization in the world. He noted that the current discussion of human rights has become a means of twisting the truth, highlighting the fact that some countries use the subject of human rights as a pretext to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
With regard to the issue of double standards in dealing with human rights cases, Elfeki said: “They talk about individual incidents as if we are to be blamed twice; once for combatting terrorism and another for terrorism itself, despite the fact that there are different kinds of violations that take place in their countries, and go unnoticed.”
Moreover, he stressed that the achievements made by Egypt in all fields led some to misuse the issue of human rights, and deviously meddle with the internal affairs of the Egyptian society. He also stated that all Egyptians should move along the path towards construction and development without paying attention to these claims.
