The BA Center for Coptic Studies organizes a webinar entitled “Coptic Wall Paintings in Islamic Times: The Ayyubid and Mamluk Periods” on Thursday, 1 April 2021, at 4:00 pm. It will be delivered by Dr. Nader Alfi Zekri, Assistant Professor of Coptic Art and Archaeology, Guiding Department, Faculty of Tourism and Hotels, University of Sadat City.
The lecture aims at introducing the features of Coptic wall paintings during Islamic times, as researchers were interested in studying Coptic arts in the period before the Muslim rule of Egypt in the first half of the seventh century. These paintings were discovered in some Coptic archaeological sites, such as El Bagawat Christian cemetery in Kharga Oasis (circa fourth century), Bishop Jeremiah’s monastery in Saqqara, and Anba Apollo’s monastery in Bawit (currently Manfalut).
Through examining Coptic wall paintings during the Islamic era, it is evident that this type of art flourished during the Islamic rule of Egypt, thus highlighting the cultural, artistic, and linguistic coexistence between Christians and Muslims in the Egyptian society at that time.
The event will be broadcast live through the Center for Coptic Studies Facebook page:
