"Reflections on the Plotinian Ascent Narrative" in a Lecture at the BA

The BA Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies, in cooperation with the Institute for Mediterranean Studies - FORTH, organizes a lecture entitled "Intellect Sober, Intellect Drunk: Some Reflections on the Plotinian Ascent Narrative" on Tuesday, 22 March 2022. The lecture is delivered by Professor John Dillon, Chair and Professor of History at Trinity College, Dublin.
The lecture seeks to examine, by a comparison of certain texts of Plotinus, a number of testimonies of near-death experiences, as well as the evidence of other ‘natural mystics’. It also explores the personal experiences Plotinus is trying to fit into the Platonist system to which he is committed.

The lecture will be broadcast via Zoom at 7:00 pm in Athens and Alexandria, 6:00 pm in Paris, 5:00 pm Oxford, and 12:00 noon in New York.
Professor John Dillon obtained his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, with a thesis titled The Fragments of Iamblichus’ Commentary on the Timaeus of Plato. He served as Head of the Classics Department at UC Berkeley (1977 - 1980). He was also the Regius Professor of Greek at Trinity College, Dublin (1980 - 2006).
