“Philosophy in Late Antique Alexandria” in a Workshop at the BA

The BA Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies organizes a free workshop entitled “Philosophy in Late Antique Alexandria”, delivered by Dr. Irini Fotini Viltanioti, Associate Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Crete and IMS-FORTH. It takes place from Monday to Thursday, 24–27 October 2022, from 2:00 – 3:30 pm, and is taught in English.
The workshop consists of a series of four lectures shedding light on Alexandria’s contribution to the development of philosophy from the 1st c. BE to the 6th c. CE. In response to the materialism advocated by the Hellenistic schools (Stoicism, Epicureanism, Cynicism, Skepticism), Alexandrian philosophers break new ground by introducing a novel form of Platonism incorporating elements of Pythagoreanism and Aristotelianism.
Their approach, which was meant to become the dominant way of doing philosophy in Late Antiquity, stands at the background of all later philosophical developments in Arabic, Byzantine, and Western philosophy.
