Conference on Management of the Shared Mediterranean Heritage

Alexandria, 20 March 2005—The Alex-Med Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is organizing the 5th conference on modern heritage, entitled International Seminar on the Management of the Shared Mediterranean Heritage, 29-31 March, in cooperation with the French Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) acting as main coordinator, the Cairo University Center for Architectural and Engineering Design Support, and the UNESCO’s World Heritage Center.
Over the course of three days, the seminar will tackle a number of issues concerning preservation of heritage of Mediterranean cities. They include Cultural common/shared values versus political and administrative vision; Conservation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries’ heritage: policies, actors and management; Reciprocal architectural and urban references: diversity and common features; The significance and conservation challenges of Beaux Arts heritage; Heritage conservation and management in Egypt and Syria; and Awareness raising and role of the civil society.
The keynote speakers comprise a group of specialists in heritage preservation: Nicole Riveill, Scientific Expert, European Commission; Ron Van Oers, UNESCO Program Specialist, WHC-UNESCO; Galila EL Kadi, Director of Research, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement; Professor Aly Raafat, CU, Egypt, Mediterranean Architecture in Cycles.
An exhibition with the theme, Conservation of the 19th and early 20th Century urban and architecture heritage of the Mediterranean cities, will accompany the conference.
