Celebrating the centenary of Yehia Hakki

Alexandria, 10 April 2005—The Scientific Committee of the Egyptian Association of Friends of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (EAFBA) is organizing a conference, 13-14 April 2005, on the late author, Yehia Hakki (1905-1992), one of the pioneers of the Twentieth Century modern literary movement in Egypt.
Celebrating his centenary, a number of authors, intellectuals and admirers of Yehia Hakki’s literature will be attending the conference to discuss his life, personal experiences and his works.
Hakki was born in Cairo, Egypt on January 7, 1905. He graduated from the Faculty of Law and practiced as a lawyer in Alexandria. Hakki has experimented with: the short story, the novel, literary criticism, essays, meditations, and literary translation. He believed that language is not merely a tool of expression but rather an integral part of the writing process in all literary norms. His writings, characterized by objectivity, were affected by his study of law.
