Inauguration of the “Education Development in Egypt” workshop

Alexandria, 3 August 2005—Wednesday, 3 August 2005 witnessed the opening session of the “Follow-up on the Education Development in Egypt Conference” post-conference workshop, organized by the Arab Reform Forum at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), 3-4 August 2005.
The opening session included speeches by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Dr. Hossam Badrawy, Chairman of the Education and Scientific Research Committee at the People’s Assembly, and Dr. Ali-El-Din Helal, Secretary General for Political Training and Education and Member of the General Secretariat of the NDP Bureau.
In his speech, Dr. Serageldin pointed out that social reform forms a major challenge for governments and executive and legislative bodies. He also maintained that it is only through social reform that political and economic reforms are achieved.
Dr. Hossam Badrawy threw light on the economic development that took place in Egypt in the past period of time in different aspects, including taxation and customs. Dr. Badrawy concluded that by the beginning of the next legislative year, there will be a dramatic change in the quality of education in Egypt.
The opening session winded up with a speech by Dr. Ali-El-Din Helal who threw light on the different causes that lead to poor communication of the development ideas and views. A number of discussion panels followed the opening of the workshop.
The two-day workshop is to discuss the recommendations and future plans proposed during the conference held in December 2004.
It also includes 8 panels covering: Pre-school Education, Pre-University Education, University and Post-graduate Education, Scientific Research, Reform Issues in Vocational Development, Abolishment of Illiteracy among Adults, Identity of Education in Egypt, and the Role of Libraries in Education and Scientific Research Development.
