Alexandria, 23 August 2005— The first Alexandria International Model United Nations (AIMUN) was organized by the Sustainable Development Association (SDA), 7-10 August 2005, in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), YES Country Network Egypt and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Alexandria.
AIMUN, launched in January 2005, is the first UN simulation held in Alexandria. This year, it featured the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with the main theme of “Re-evaluation of the MENA performance towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region”, and the sub-themes of “Political Participation” and “Good Governance”.
The model is a student-to-student activity run by the youth members of SDA. The selected 35 youth participants attended a preparatory course to learn how to debate and negotiate, as well as how to set a plan for the MENA countries to achieve the MDGs.
The model’s goals were to introduce the Alexandrian students to the experience of the UN model and to raise their awareness of development issues as well as the UN Millennium Declaration and the MDGs. In addition, it aimed to hone their communication, negotiation and presentation skills. The team came up with a set of suggestions and recommendations that can be implemented among the youth and civil society.
It is planned to organize this program again next year.
