Arabic Calligraphy Seminar and Exhibition

Alexandria, 14 September 2005—The Calligraphy Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is organizing a seminar, on the different types of Arabic calligraphy, 15 September in the Auditorium at 12 pm. It features artists Ahmed El-Beshly, specialist in Arabic handwriting at the Calligraphy School in Cairo, and Mohamed El-Maghraby, Deputy Director of the Mohamed Ibrahim School for Arabic Calligraphy in Alexandria.

The seminar sheds light on the history of both El-Thuluth and Naskh Arabic calligraphy, their development over the years, their characteristics and uniqueness, in addition to a display of their styles.

Attendees include a number of professors and students from the Mohammed Ibrahim School and Association for Arabic Calligraphy in Alexandria, the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Egyptian Association for Arabic Calligraphy, many Arabic calligraphy artists and media figures. The seminar is moderated by Mr. Mohamed Rotail, Arabic calligraphy expert at the BA.

The Center is also organizing an exhibition to display the works of children and youth who participated in the BA’s summer workshops. The workshops involved designing and creating works of art using fabric, Canson paper, glass scraps, matchsticks, grains, eggs, plasticine and clay. The BA, in addition, will distribute certificates and prizes to the students of these workshops.
