Digitizing the Arab Memory

Alexandria— The Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT), in cooperation with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, UNESCA, and the League for Arab States will organize "Second Workshop on Digitizing the Arab Memory" during the period from 17-19 April 2007.

The objective of Digitizing the Arab Memory; “Memory of the Arab World” (Phase II) is to identify and bring together all of the establishments within the Arab countries that are concerned with the documentation and dissemination of our heritage, to discuss means of cooperation, and to identify ways to enrich the Arabic heritage e-content on the internet.

The First Workshop: Towards Digitizing the Arab Memory: “A Cooperation Framework” was held on 27-28 November 2005. The event revolved around methods and experiences pertaining to safeguarding Arab Heritage. The main recommendation of the first workshop was the need to approach the documentation of the Arab Heritage in a collective manner through the formation of the Project: Memory of the Arab World.

The thematic lines considered for the second workshop are:
• UNESCO and Arab league efforts in digitizing memories of the World.
• Arab Countries’ efforts in digitizing and disseminating Arab Heritage.
• Regional & International Organizations’ efforts in digitizing and disseminating Arab Heritage electronically.
• The use of IT in digitizing and disseminating Collective Memories.
• An open discussion focused on the formation of the “Memory of the Arab World” Project
