Cervical cancer develops slowly, and the key precursor is severe dysplasia. Mild dysplasia almost always regresses spontaneously; most moderate dysplasias also regress.

Nearly 8% of cervical cancers seen develop between 18 – 35 years whereas 92% of cervical cancers appear between ages 35 and 50.
