An salmonella outbreak at a fast food chain started initially with contaminated tomatoes. Virtually all early cases reported eating sandwiches with tomatoes. Employees of this restaurant were encouraged to eat their meals on site and many became infected as a result of tomato exposure. They in turn contaminated other food items and cases reported during the latter phase of the outbreak reported exposure to a variety of other food items.
Data are from an unpublished outbreak investigation and are estimates based on authors recall
